Rudy Valentino, coach of former UFC lightweight champion revealed that Hawaiian had sinusitis for the bout with Frankie Edgar and had a fever for two weeks made it difficult to prepare for the big fight.
Rudy spoke to CagePotato.com:
"A judge gave all the rounds to Edgar but I saw the fight, and I have not seen the movie again, but seeing it as it happened, I felt that BJ won the first 3 rounds. The fourth and the fifth was there he lost it. I BJ won the fight. He was also battling a sinus infection and was with antibiotics, so I was not one hundred percent. "
"I'm not making excuses, it's just what happened. Did not see him losing that fight, but if I saw him lose the fifth round. And the effectiveness of punches, I think BJ won. Frankie did two takedowns but BJ got up really fast and nothing happened on the ground, so I dont know if they could score the fight based on those 2 takedowns. "
"It does not detract from Frankie Edgar. He fought really well and had a good strategy. The fight was very good and had a good strategy. Standing fought very well, was moving a lot, inside and out, really fast. Frankie fought a very and strategic good fight. I do not want to criticize this is Frankie, because I like Frankie and fought well. "
Valentino spoke BJ received treatment before the fight, saying that the fever for 2 weeks did not help the preparation of the ex-champion.
"In the fifth round BJ told he had to win that round to win the fight. But sometimes things do not go as they wish. While taking antibiotics and struggling to heal and bearingin fever for two weeks, these are certain factors that I slowed down. That was not the BJ Penn that we had in the preparation for 3 months, making sparring as he did. "
"We never thought Frankie Edgar was not a top contender. We take it seriously. We knew BJ could hurt his stand-up and takedowns. But BJ was not 100%, what we saw in the fight was to beating him sick. Dana did not want to call three weeks before the fight and cancel because I was sick. BJ being the champion who is just came out and fought. "
Only time will tell if BJ wants a rematch for the title or passed to the welterweight final.
